Portimao is a Portuguese town of 60,000 habitants, and is in the south of Portugal in the Algarve region in the Province of Faro. Its beaches are its main tourist attraction, and inside its local economy, fishing is also an important source of income. Portimao is an ideal destination for aquatic sport lovers, those who enjoy surf, windsurf, or kitesurf due to the perfect conditions that exist here. Also adding to the tourist attraction are the big discoteques, bars, restaurants, and night life. Portimao is one of the main tourist destinations in Portugal and of Algarve. Not in vain, it is the second lagrest town in this Portuguese region. It is an ideal place to spend your vacation in and there are plenty of places to find accomodation: rural houses, apartments, villas, hotels, hostels, etc. In fact, you will find more accomodation here than anywhere else in Portugal.
The municipality is divided into three parts, that of Portimao that has more than 40,000 habitants, and those of Alvor and Mexilhoeira Grande. Portimao is near other touristic municipalities such as Lagoa, Lagos, Silves, and Monchique.
In Portimao you will find some of the most incredible beaches in Portugal, where often you will see windsurf or kitesurf competitions. The beaches and climate, and temperature are fantastic here. There are plenty of coves, some tiny and others immense in size, and some of which you can only get to by boat. Here you will find caves, sheer cliffs, golden sand, and lots of sun.
On one of its beaches, that of Playa de Rocha, there is a large tourist infrastructure there, part of which are golf courses and a variety of cultural interests.
Portimao is a destination for everyone as there are lots of activities to carry out, anything from enjoying the warm sunny beaches, to taking a boatride to watch dolphins. Or if you so desire, you can go shopping or play golf on its fabulous golf courses. |
